This summer has been a mixed blessing for the little sedum that I brought for the Festival for the New City, but after some care through the worst of the heat waves, they are doing awesome. I have to thin them out a little (I just put all of the leftover sedum in the trays I had) but they are super happy little plants.

I am done with the project, except for collecting photos from the participants at the festival and adding those to the site/map. But that’s it for me and Seeding the City. I managed to get about 60 sites around nyc (don’t know if I will get photos from all of them) and I hope that some of those sites continue to grow and thrive. I had about a dozen trays left from the various growing seasons and the festival, which I am hoping to donate to a local group. I will let you know when that happens also.

It has been an interesting project from which I have learned a lot (not the least of which was about green roofs!) and it wouldn’t be the project it is today without the help of the amazing Amanda Burr who project managed it from infancy to tween hood. But now it is time to say goodbye and move on to other amazing projects.

If you want to build your own green roof – the recipe and resources are here. If you want to stay in touch about upcoming projects, sign up for my mailing list here or become a fan of my FaceBook page.

Almost 50 modules were built and distributed, and I met people from around the world who were interested in the project.

For those of you with modules, make sure you are watering them regularly during this sunny week ahead, and upload your photos to the flickr group: http://www.flickr.com/groups/1686377@N21/ I can’t wait to see all the new homes. Also, if you didn’t get a flag, I will be in touch when new flags are printed and delivered…

I will have a limited number of modules available (50) on a first come first serve basis. I will help you build a module, and each module gets 4 sedum starts (these little guys LOVE to spread, so more than that reduces their chance for healthy growth). Each participant will get a module and a Seeding the City flag to take home for rooftop installation!

Find me at booth #24 in front of the New Museum. See you Saturday!

Let’s get dirty!

Come out to the Festival of Ideas StreetFest on May 7th, and build your own green roof module to take home (you’ll get a flag too!)

This amazing new take on a street fair will be full of interesting & participatory projects, great events and super delish food. (Hello ScratchBread!)

Here’s the basic gist:

The Festival of Ideas for the New City, May 4-8, 2011, is a major new collaborative initiative in New York involving scores of Downtown organizations, from universities to arts institutions and community groups, working together to effect change. A first for New York, the Festival will harness the power of the creative community to imagine the future city and explore the ideas destined to shape it. It will take place in multiple venues Downtown and is organized around three central programs: a conference of symposia; an innovative StreetFest along the Bowery; and over one hundred independent projects and public events. The Festival will serve as a platform for artists, writers, architects, engineers, designers, urban farmers, planners, and thought leaders to exchange ideas, propose solutions, and invite the public to participate.

In the Choate Room on the 1st floor

Presented in tandem with Sustainability Lab & Cornfield, this panel will look back and look ahead at the ever-evolving Do-It-Yourself ethic and inherent aesthetics as it relates to cultural production. Timed with the 30th anniversary of Washington DC’s Dischord Records – an internationally recognized independent record label supporting punk rock music that has been artist run since its inception – this panel will examine the DIY organizing model that grew out of punk rock subculture and is tied to punk ideology and anti-consumerism. How is DIY being redefined as aspects of that culture shift from being an underground mantra to a cable TV station slogan and Urban Outfitters commodity? What can cultural producers learn from sustainable food producers? How can a volunteer-run operation be sustainable?

Panelists: Nancy Bannon, artist, DC & NYC; Bryce Dwyer, InCUBATE, Chicago; Ian MacKaye, co-founder of Dischord Records, DC; Eve Mosher, Seeding the City, NYC; Abigail Satinsky, InCUBATE, Chicago

Moderator: Jeff Hnilicka, cultural worker, Member of Hit Factorie and organizer of FEAST, Brooklyn

So I decided to try growing some herbs in the modules. I took two modules and planted oregano, thyme, tarragon and lavender in them – and they are loving it! It takes a bit of maintenance (the sedum don’t know), like watering when its been super hot. I’m planning to do a bunch of herb modules to offer to those who are interested! (I will post pics soon).

I am also putting together workshops for this summer for those who are interested! You bring your people and I’ll bring the knowledge and resources. Building your own green roof can be educational, fun, rewarding, collaborative and a little dirty! Contact me for more information!

Finally, I’m excited to be introducing the project in our first location outside of NYC – at Fathom Creative in Washington, D.C. I would love to introduce the projects in other locations, again – get in touch if you want to get it started!
